By submitting a question to BEAR Magazine’s advice column (“the Column”) through our online form, you agree to these terms. Please read them before you submit.
BEAR Magazine is published by Beard & Bear LLC. In these terms, “we,” “us,” and “our” mean Beard & Bear LLC.
1. Who can submit
You must be 18 or older to submit a question. We do not knowingly accept submissions from minors.
2. What we ask for
We ask for three things: your first name (or a name of your choosing), a rough location — city and state, or region — and an email address.
Your email address is for our use only and will never be printed, published, or shared. We use it solely to contact you about your submission — for example, to check a detail before we run it. We may not contact you at all, so please don’t rely on us getting in touch before publication.
Beyond that, please don’t send us your full name, phone number, address, or other personal details. Don’t send us anything you wouldn’t want to see in print.
3. Permission to publish
By submitting, you grant Beard & Bear LLC a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual licence to publish, reproduce, edit, distribute, and archive your submission, in whole or in part, in connection with BEAR Magazine only. That covers:
- the printed magazine, including back issues and archives;
- the BEAR website, newsletter, and social media channels; and
- any anthology, “best of,” or collected edition of the Column published under the BEAR name.
We will not license your submission to third parties, publish it under any other title, or use it in advertising or marketing material. If BEAR Magazine is transferred to a new owner, this licence transfers with it on the same terms and stays limited to BEAR.
You keep ownership of what you wrote.
This licence is irrevocable once your submission has been published.
4. Your name and location
If we publish your question, we will normally print it with the name and location you gave us. Your email address is never printed. If you’d rather we didn’t use your name, enter “name withheld” or “anonymous” in the name field on the form and we’ll use that instead. We may still print a general location (e.g. “the Midwest”) unless you ask us not to.
5. Editing
We may edit submissions for length, clarity, style, and legal reasons, and we may remove or change details that could identify you or anyone else. We may also combine similar questions from different readers into one published letter.
6. No guarantee, no payment
We receive more questions than we can print. We’re under no obligation to publish any submission, respond to it, or explain why we didn’t. Submissions are unpaid.
7. Other people in your question
If your question involves someone else, please change or leave out details that would identify them. Don’t submit anything defamatory, harassing, or that discloses someone else’s private information without their agreement. You are responsible for what you send us.
8. Your assurances
By submitting, you confirm that: the submission is your own work; it’s truthful as far as you know; you have the right to send it to us; and publishing it won’t infringe anyone else’s rights.
9. This is not professional advice
The Column is published for general interest and entertainment. Our columnist is not your doctor, therapist, lawyer, or financial adviser, and nothing published should be treated as professional advice or as creating any kind of professional relationship. Always consult a qualified professional about your own situation.
If you’re in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US) or your local emergency services rather than writing to us — we can’t respond quickly or privately.
10. What we do with your information
We keep submissions on file so we can edit, publish, and archive the Column.
Your email address is used only to contact you about your submission. We don’t sell it, we don’t share it outside our editorial team, and we won’t add you to a mailing list or send you marketing without asking you separately first.
Withdrawing your question. If you change your mind, email hello@thebearmag.com from the address you submitted with, and we’ll pull your question. We can do this any time before the issue goes to print. After that we can’t recall a printed copy, though we can usually remove it from our website.
11. Refusal and removal
We can decline, edit, or remove any submission at any time, for any reason.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version in force is the one published at the time you submit.
13. Governing law
These terms form an agreement between you and Beard & Bear LLC, governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state courts located in Queens County, New York, or in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
